How To Play Checkers

Objective: The goal of checkers is to either capture all of your opponent’s pieces or block them in such a way that they cannot make any legal moves.

Board Setup:

Checkers is played on an 10×10 grid board, with each player having 12 pieces.
Players stand across from each other, with the board oriented so that each player has a dark square on their right-hand side.
Each player’s pieces are placed on the dark squares of the three rows closest to them.

Movement:

Pieces move diagonally forward one square.
If a player’s piece reaches the last row on the opponent’s side, it is “crowned” and becomes a “king.” Kings can move both forward and backward diagonally.

Capturing:

When a player’s piece is adjacent to an opponent’s piece with an empty square on the other side, the player can jump over the opponent’s piece and remove it from the board.
Multiple captures can be made in a single turn, as long as the capturing piece continues to have valid jumping moves.
If a player has the opportunity to capture an opponent’s piece, they must do so (mandatory capture).

Gameplay: Players take turns to make moves, starting with the player controlling the dark-colored pieces. A player moves one of their pieces diagonally to an adjacent empty square, or they make a capturing move. Captured pieces are removed from the board immediately. Kings can move both forward and backward diagonally, increasing their mobility and capture potential.

Winning: A player wins by either capturing all of their opponent’s pieces or putting their opponent in a position where they cannot make a legal move.

Tips:

Plan your moves ahead to create opportunities for captures.
Pay attention to the board’s center, as controlling the center can give you an advantage.
Protect your back row to prevent your opponent’s pieces from becoming kings easily.
Use your kings strategically to control the board and block your opponent’s moves.
